Course/Module description:
The Course will be based on 13 lectures, 90 minutes long each. It will combine a discussion of the relevant theories and the relevant historical case studies, relating to the study of intelligence. Alongside the theoretical aspect, an emphasis will be placed on theories relating to threat perception, cognitive biases, and decision making. In the historical side, an emphasis will be given to analyzing nuclear proliferation related operations.

Course/Module aims:
The course will aim to equip IR students with the relevant theoretical infrastructure, historical background and practical knowledge to develop a deep understanding of the study of intelligence as an academic discipline. The course will focus on the relevant core issues in the study of intelligence, including the philosophy of scientific thought, the interface between decision making and intelligence gathering and analysis, and the historical aspects of intelligence and covert operations. The course will focus on the inherent enemies of intelligence’, and different intellectual dilemmas affecting intelligence assessments.

Learning outcomes - On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:
The students will acquire the analytical and methodological tools relevant to assess, review and classify the core issues relating to the study of intelligence.

6. Strategic surprises: the case pf Pearl Harbor
7. Intelligence and nuclear weapons
8. Operation Thunderbolt, the raid on Entebbe, the anatomy of decision-making and special operations.

Additional information:
The final grade will be based on a home exam. The students will be asked to hand it in during the last lecture of the semester. The final version of the reading list will be made available during the first lecture.
