Course/Module description:
In recent years, a recognition of the social, public and environmental implications of business operations has been growing. This recognition is the engine behind waves of consumer and social protests, regulatory and legal initiatives, and new business practices. Since the rise of the corporation as a dominant economic player, corporations have had far-reaching social and public influences. However, technological, social and political characteristics of the present age create new challenges and dynamics that managers and policymakers can no longer evade. As a result of these developments, businesses are increasingly being measured not only on the basis of efficiency considerations and capital maximization for shareholders, but also in light of the social and environmental implications of their operations. These consequences are often unpredictable, and evade existing models of decision making and risk assessment. In the course we will ask questions such as who should owe data? Whether and how does the business model of large digital platforms violate the right to privacy? What are the social implications of insurance and credit which are based on Machine learning? Can ethical rules be coded into computerized systems, then who should determine the rules and how?.
