Course/Module description:
During this year-long seminar the students will plan and conduct a research study that will apply theoretical, empirical and research learning in the field of health disparities. Specifically, the seminar will focus on research issues related to health disparities and health behaviors between key groups in Israeli society. We will examine, among other things, the extent and nature of these gaps, and possible reasons for the gaps (with an emphasis on social factors).
The research project will be based mainly on a Central Bureau of Statistics public data file with results from the 2017 Social Survey. This will provide the students with experience in using existing databases, an ability that can be used by social workers in a variety of positions, many of which involve secondary analysis of existing databases.

Course/Module aims:
1. Expose students to theoretical and empirical knowledge regarding health gaps - in Israel and around the world.

2 Develop critical thinking capabilities, both in reading the health disparities research literature and in writing a research proposal and research paper.

3. Provide hands-on experience in conducting research - from the initial stages of formulating a research question and writing a research proposal, through analyzing the data, to the stage of drawing conclusions and writing the research report.

4. Provide the experience of working in a research group which together studies health disparities.

Learning outcomes - On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:
At the end of this course students will be able to:

1. Identify and formulate a research question of academic and policy importance, which can be answered through empirical research

2. Summarize and critique previous conceptual and empirical reports in an up-to-date and clear literature review.

3. Write and submit a research proposal that meets standard scientific criteria.

4. Carry out all the standard stages of a research project.

5. Analyze research data.

6. Explain, evaluate, critique and discuss research findings in light of existing literature in the field.

7. Prepare and present a research report that meets scientific standards, that discusses practical implications, and that is accessible to decision makers.

Attendance requirements(%):
100%

Teaching arrangement and method of instruction: During the academic year a number of meetings will be held in the plenum in which the main course content will be delivered through the presentation of principles. In addition, there will be independent assignments, assignments for study partners, and discussions in small groups. Other sessions will be devoted to small group work, to focus and work on specific research projects.

Course/Module Content:
1. Definitions and conceputalizations of "health disparities", identification of ways in which the concept has found expression in research in the field.

2. The writing of a research proposal: why the topic is important, what is already known about the topic, formulation of an applied research question and analysis plan, review of the literature, and the writing of a methods chapter.

3. Principles of data analysis.
