Course/Module description:
A historical and literary review of one of the most important periods of Italian history and culture between the two world wars and the 1970s, with an emphasis on the development of the Italian novel in the 20th century as a sign and symbol of identity processes within Italian society. The course is intended to bring to the table the causes and consequences of literary and cultural tendencies of post-Unitarian Italy, the birth of the novel and the birth of language, as cultural tools for building an Italian national identity. The course is divided into two main periods: 1915-1945, Wars and Fascism and 1945-1970, National Construction and Development in the post-World War II era. At the center of the interest are writers and thinkers such as P. Marinetti, L. Pirandello, I. Svevo, A. Gramsci, B. Croce, A. Moravia, I. Calvino, G. Debenedetti, P. Pasolini, L. Sciasci. Plays and films will be an integral part of the course material: R. Rossellini, Taviani Brothers, P. Maselli, P.P. Pasolini, thanks to a large collection of sources - written, visual, and kinetic texts - methodologically, the approach of the course will be comparative and interdisciplinary.
Course/Module aims:
To give the students a historical and literary overview of one of the most important periods of Italian history and culture between the two World Wars and the 1970s, with an emphasis on the development of the Italian novel in the 20th century as a sign and symbol of identity processes within Italian society. The purpose of the course is to discuss the causes and consequences of the literary and cultural choices and tendencies of post-Unitarian Italy, the birth of the sharp novel and the birth of language, as cultural tools for building an Italian national identity. To develop analytical tools for understanding the connection between the historical phenomenon represented by literature and its deep relationship with a question related to national questions and to the process of modernization shows how their interaction is the changes in the socio-historical, religious and political product.
Learning outcomes - On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:
To control the broad corpus of selected sources to have to contend along the route.
In order to describe and differentiate between the different sources and disciplines that the same sources belong to.
To allow analyzes, to develop critical questions, to recognize the different genres of the corpus of research.
To compare texts of different writers and genres.
To criticize, evaluate, interpret the texts, books, and scientific articles of the various authors and to explain their meaning in the context of the discussion
