Course/Module description:
This course deals with the treatment and rehabilitation of individuals with orthopedic injuries. The first part covers a range of diagnoses and their medical treatment, and the second part covers the rehabilitation process in occupational therapy

Course/Module aims:
- provide students with an introduction to diseases, tests and principles of medical intervention
- to introduce students to the role of the occupational therapist in the process of rehabilitation of orthopedic diseases and injuries

Learning outcomes - On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:
1. Differentiate between a variety of orthopedic diagnoses
2. Identify and describe the symptoms of common orthopedic diagnoses
3. describe intervention approaches in orthopedic OT
4. recommend appropriate OT intervention

Teaching arrangement and method of instruction: Lectures, examples, visit to the orthopedic department of Hadassah hospital

1. Treatment and diagnosis of pain

2. Common trauma issues in orthopedics
-fractures: types, biological process of healing
- general treatment, common complications and the rehabilitation process
- examples of fractures: hip, ankle, wrist
- childhood fractures

3. Joint injuries
- fractures in the joints: characteristics, intervention, complications
-sports injuries: characteristics, intervention, complications
- overuse
- shoulder dislocation: characteristics, intervention, complications

4. Orthopedic trauma
- complexities and principles of intervention in terms of open wounds, multiple injuries, injured organs, soft tissue injury, blood system injury, neurological injury

5. Joint disease
- characteristics, intervention, surgery
- joint replacement

6. The spinal cord
- spinal injury and fractures
- deformities of the spinal column
- lower back pain

7. neuro-musculoskeletal disease

8. childhood orthopedic diseases

9. Bone and joint infections

10. Joint disease

11. tumours in the skeletal system

12. introduction to prostheses

13. amputations
