Course/Module description:
This course focuses on the therapeutic relationship, and the Occupational Therapy theoretical concepts on theraputic relations. The course provides students with theoretical and practical skills to understand the therapeutic relationship and communication skills needed for a therapist and client and the impact of this relationship on therapy outcomes
Course/Module aims:
- To expand theoretical knowledge and its application to intervention with regard to the therapeutic relationship
- To assist in the development of coping skills in response to a variety of therapeutic situations
- Providing information through readings and experiential learning
- Discuss interpersonal communication skills (verbal and non-verbal) used in the therapeutic relationship
- provide observation skills to analyse interpersonal interactions
Learning outcomes - On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:
1. Identify different styles of communications between a therapist and client
2. Define the characteristics of different styles of communication
3. Conduct an interview with a client to gain information regarding occupations
4.Transcribe an interview
5. Analyse an interview using ratings and scales
6. Conduct a structured observation of interpersonal communication skills
7. Analyse the communication skills of a client

2. Characteristics of a therapeutic relationship
3. Identifying and developing communication skills of a client and therapist
4. Coping with a variety of situations that arise in the intervention process
5. Introduction to the communication skills used in the interviewing process
