Course/Module description:
This course deals with the processes that provide the basis for emotional and social develop of babies and toddlers. The course will relate to developmental theories as a basis for paediatric psychiatric occupational therapy. Emphasis will be placed on the child/parent relationship in its nature and quality, in relation to child development, understanding the potential role that parents may provide in the development of "at risk" children.
In addition, this course will address the basic principles of assessment of intervention in the field of paediatric pyschiatric occupational therapy.
Course/Module aims:
1. Introduce the field of occupational therapy for children with emotional disturbances
2. Understanding of developmental theory and its application to occupational therapy intervention for children with emotional disturbances
3. Provide knowledge of intervention to promote parent-child interactions for children at risk of emotional disturbances
4. Provide knowledege of intervention for sensory and emotional modulation disorders
Learning outcomes - On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:
1. Collect information from relevant sources regarding a childs sensory and emotional profile
2. Identify congenital and environmental factors that impact on a childs emotional development
3. Explain emotional-functional difficulties in relation to congenital sensory processing factors
4. Assess the quality of a parent-child interaction
5. Develop a basic intervention program for children with emotional difficulties
