Course/Module description:
This course deals with clinical and social issues related to the treatment of the elderly. The course will cover theoretical aspects, demographics, social, financial and systematic issues, physiology and clinical aspects of ageing. The "Geriatrics giants" and other major topics in the field will be taught.

Course/Module aims:
1. To introduce issues of demographics of ageing, including the financial and social issues of health in the ageing population
2. Introduce biological theories of aging‏ and physiological and clinical changes in ageing.
3. Provide knowledge of clinical and social issues associated with intervention in the elderly population
4. Introduce ethical issues of treatment of the elderly.

Learning outcomes - On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:
1. Describe major demographic issues and the financial and systematic impact of the ageing on the health system
2. Describe biological theories of the ageing process
3. Describe and explaine physiological and clinical changes in the ageing process
4. Describe and explain main issues of the "Geriatrics giants"- instability, impaired intellect /memory, incontinence, iatrogenesis (polypharmacy).
5. Describe and explain major ageing issues in the topics of frailty, nutrition, sleep issues and pressure sores.
6. Discuss ethical issues in the treatment of the elderly- palliative care and end of life, and decision making competence.

Teaching arrangement and method of instruction: Frontal lectures, most of the lectures will be online Zoom Live, discussions, case studies, Learning independently as a preparation for class.

* Unique issues in the geriatric population-
4.The "Geriatrics giants:
- instability
- incontinence
- impaired intellect /memory
- iatrogenesis (polypharmacy)
5.Nutrition
6.Pressure sores
7.Sleep disorders
8.Frailty
9.Lonliness
10.Palliative care and end of life
11.Ethical issues in autonomy and guardianship- including decision making competence.
