Course/Module description:
In this course, students with learn the Occupational therapy role in mental health practice given current social, cultural, medical and scientific trends. Introduction to central models and approaches in mental health occupational therapy and application in the clinical fields of treatment and rehabilitation.

Course/Module aims:
To expand understanding of complex interplay between personal, occupational and environmental factors in mental health and their impact on aspects of meaningful participation as a mediator of recovery from mental illness, well-being and health. To present central approaches and models of occupational therapy in mental health.
To introduce students to the continuum of clinical practice, including evaluation and intervention in range of mental health services.

Learning outcomes - On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:
1.To identify and describe main trends in mental health services.
2. to identify factors affecting engagement in meaningful participation among people with mental health issues through terms and concepts of OTPF and ICS.
3. To describe main principles for implementation of occupational therapy theories and models in mental heath using adequately terms.
4. To identify and report on main assessment and intervention procedures to promote participation in meaningful occupations.
5. To describe central issues in main approaches to mental health practice in community and inpatient settings.

Teaching arrangement and method of instruction: Lectures, discussion,s movies, case studies, tasks, peer learning, in-field study.

Course/Module Content:
1.Review of changes in the field and its impacts on the mental health service provision in Israel and the world in terms of medicine, laws and culture
2.The relationship between personal, occupational and environmental factors and their impact on participation and quality of life
3. Stigma and mental health
4. The rationale and process of occupational therapy intervention in mental health
5. Application of occupational therapy models, theoretic rationale, foundation concepts, principles in mental health interventions
6. Introduction to general models in mental health with relevance to occupational therapy practice: Humanistic model, recovery model and psychodynamic model.
7. Introduction to the range occupational therapy services in mental health in Israel
