Course/Module description:
The course focuses on introducing foundation concepts of psychiatry – symptoms, syndromes, diagnoses of mental illness through their relation to different intervention methods including medication. The course includes an introduction to the field of mental illness including historical, culture, social and medical aspects

Course/Module aims:
1. To introduce students to foundation concepts of psychiatry
2. To introduce students to phenomenology of mental disorders (symptoms, syndromes, nosology)
3. To introduce students to different approaches of treating mental disorders
4. To introduce students to concepts of illness in psychosocial terms

Learning outcomes - On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:
1. Identity a variety of emotional disorders
2. Understand professional terminology and apply the terminology to professional discussions
3. Identify pharmaceutical treatment
4. Relate to the medical side effects as part of coping with different conditions
5. Identify a variety of approaches and the modern structure of the field

Teaching arrangement and method of instruction: Lecture, discussions, readings, case studies

Course/Module Content:
1. Introduction – psychiatry and its place in terms of other disciplines; the history of psychiatry; different approaches to mental disorders; the treatment systems; classification
2. Psychotic illness – schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, other psychosis
3. Theories of development, the structure of the person, concepts of psychodynamic therapy
4. Neurotic disorders – PTSD and disassociation; panic attacks; OCD; anxiety disorder
5. Personality disorders – definition, theoretic approaches, clinical aspects and treatment
6. Eating disorders
7. Aggression and suicidal tendencies in psychiatry
