Course/Module description:
This course is designed to provide students with basic concepts in the field of sociology of health and medicine, to provide a contextual and comparative understanding of the modern medical establishment and to expose the students to the latest developments which the medical establishment and healthcare service markets are undergoing.
During the course we will discuss such topics as: the theoretical foundations and history of medical sociology, social construction of the knowledge and practice of medicine, different models of health, a sociological view of the medical profession, social determinants of health and health inequalities, alternative medicine as a challenge to the dominance of bio-medicine, social and cultural construction of health and illness and risk factors to health, gender and health, cultural competition in health care etc. About a third of the course will be devoted to the application of these theoretical topics in the Israeli context.
Course/Module aims:
The overall goal is to develop critical sociological thinking through the prism of the fields of health and medicine and learn how to apply it in professional fields.
Learning outcomes - On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:
• Explain, with the use of examples, the main spheres of application of medical sociology
• Describe the differences between different approaches to social research of medicine
• Develop critical thinking about concepts of health and disease and modern medical practice
• Describe, with use of examples, the origin of gaps in health indicators between different social and cultural groups generally and in Israel in particular
• Explain the critical role of social factors in health
