Course/Module description:
Local anesthesia in dentistry – learning how to practice safe and effective local anesthesia in dentistry through avoiding the complications that may result from hazards or errors in technique.

Course/Module aims:
The student will understand the principles of local anesthesia administration in dentistry and will be able to deliver local anesthesia in the oral cavity for restorative and surgical procedures or other treatment as needed/required, including management of potential complications of local anesthesia.

Learning outcomes - On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:
• Assess the probability of the patient to safely undergo dental procedures under local anesthesia.
• State the pharmacology and the clinical properties of the local anesthetics and vasoconstrictors and conclude their suitability to the specific patient and/or procedure.
• Carry out basic local anesthesia techniques.
• Identify local and systemic complications of local anesthesia and analyze the correct way of coping.

Course/Module Content:
• Introduction, sterilization, Patient evaluation.
• Pharmacology of local anesthetics and of vasoconstrictors.
• The armamentarium for local anesthesia.
• Upper jaw - techniques of regional anesthesia.
• Lower jaw - techniques of regional anesthesia.
• Local complications in local anesthesia.
• Systemic complications in local anesthesia.
• Quiz prior to hands on.
