Course/Module description:
Basic knowledge of common cancers
and approach to the cancer patient.
Understanding the principle of
cancer treatment including chemotherapy,
radiation therapy, biological and
immunological therapy.
Awareness of the natural history
of cancer patient, identification
of life threatening conditions
and side effects of the treatment.
Treating the cancer patient in
holistic way – by taking in consideration
his emotional and social background.

Course/Module aims:
Understanding the basic
approach to the management
and treatment of cancer.
Ability to recognize and
treat life threatening conditions
in cancer patient.

Learning outcomes - On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:
- Recognize emergencies in cancer patients.
- present an oncological case.
- Find relevant literature to oncological case.
- Perform SOAP

Course/Module Content:
Introduction to oncology – the staging system, types of treatments (surgical, neoadjuvant adjuvant and palliative) and response evaluation.
Principles of “classic” chemotherapy, hormonal therapy biological therapy, immunotherapy and radiation therapy.
Breast cancer as a model –presentation, classification of the disease, treatment options and evidence based decision making, the follow-up and the natural history of the disease.
The holistic approach to the cancer patient taking in consideration his emotional and social background.
Side effects and complications of the oncological treatment.
Recognition of life threatening emergencies in oncology – spinal cord compression, febrile neutropenia, electrolytes disturbances, superior vena cava syndrome, diarrhea and mucositis.
Psychological aspects of patient with cancer.
New approaches to cancer, molecular and genetic testing and immunological approach.
Cancer research – in focus of cancer and its microenvironment , metastasis and treatment resistance.
