Course/Module description:
Neurology and Neurosurgery Course for fifth year medical students.
Taught in Hadassah Medical Center and Shaare Zedek Medical Center.
Course duration is 4 weeks.
Course/Module aims:
Learn basic neurology and neurosurgery, which is required by every physician, and identify situations where a neurologist / neurosurgeon should be consulted for optimal patient care.
Learning outcomes - On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:
To know the emergencies in neurology and neurosurgery
To know the common diseases in neurology and neurosurgery, and what are the therapeutic approaches to those diseases

Lectures, clinics, PBL, guided rounds, shadowing in clinic and operating rooms, patient admissions, attendance in the emergency room

Neurology round:
1. Emergencies:
A. Stroke
B. Epilepsy
C. Acute central nervous system infection including meningitis and encephalitis
2. Others:
A. Motor Disorders
B. Tumors of the nervous system
C. Peripheral nervous system diseases
D. Muscle diseases
E. Immune-mediated diseases - neuroimmunology - sclerosis
F. Neurological disorders: visual pathologies in the optic nerve, visual pathways and the visual cortex
G. Sharp and chronic cognitive disorders
H. Neurologic pain (headaches and others)
Neurosurgery round:
1. Managing a patient with a minor head injury
2. Management of a patient suffering from headaches
3. General reference to head tumors
4. Management of a patient suspected of having sub-arachnoid hemorrhage, cerebral aneurysm and other vascular deformities
5. Spine and spinal cord tumors, degenerative diseases of the spinal cord, and evaluation of spinal stability

The requirements for passing the rotation successfully include:
Receiving a passing grade in the department entrance test (pass/fail format)
Submission of the required assignments in the rotation's assignment book.
Obtaining a passing grade in the end-of-rotation test and the final exam at the end of the year.
The students' grade at the end of the rotation consists of the following components:
Final oral test at the end of the rotation (30%)
Written test at the end of the fifth year (70%)
