Course/Module description:
Epidemiology and public health for fifth year is an entry level course given to medical students.
The goal of this course is to provide medical students with adequate background and qualified them with skills that are essential for every physician in epidemiology, public health, healthcare economics, management and policy, research methods, healthcare communication and promotion, preventive medicine, and environmental aspects of healthcare.
As this is a short introduction course it is inherently a "taste" of the aforementioned topics, and students are encouraged to expand their knowledge with materials explained during the course.
As part of the course students will undergo GCP training which will grant them authorisation to conduct medical research.

Course/Module aims:
To deepen the understanding of epidemiology and statistics.
To get to know the basic terms in health economics and policy and its effect on decision making and a physician actions as part of the healthcare system.
To encourage and practice critical reading of articles and other sources of information, including communication of health to the general public, for the purpose of fostering literacy and as a working order.
To provide basic tools for research in the medical world.

Learning outcomes - On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:
At the successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
1. Use basic terms in epidemiology.
2. Apply their duties as physicians in a wider context of health, environment, and society.
3. Understand basic statistical tools used for medical research.
4. Critically review medical scientific literature and communicate it.
5. List the components of the Israeli healthcare system, including advantages and disadvantages.

80% of synchronised lectures.
