Course/Module description:
Feminist researchers claim that women's physical health and mental health are not only derived from biological factors, but also by social factors such as the world of work, economic status, social expectations and cultural norms (Lev-Wiesel et al., 2005). In the course we will discuss the questions of how norms, expectations and conventions affect women's physical and mental health. How do gender perceptions shape medical practice and scientific thinking?

Learning outcomes - On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:
At the end of the course the students will:
1. Understand basic concepts of health and gender.
2. Be able to analyze critically the theoretical text that deals with health and gender.
3. Identify the social, cultural and structural contexts of women's health in Israel.
4. Implement gender thinking in the continuation of their clinical studies.

1. Introduction: social and cultural aspects of health and illness - gender perspective.
2. The differences between women and men - nature or culture?
3. Sexuality and Fertility in a Critical Perspective - The Israeli Case.
4. Beauty Myth - beauty as a social and medical concept.
5. Gender Perceptions in Medicine - The Case of Heart Disease.
6. Social bargaining and case-control of Arab women in Israel.
7. Women in the world of medicine and science - thoughts and reflections for the future.
