Course/Module description:
The course will provide knowledge and tools in identifying and treating child victims of maltreatment. During the course, students will receive knowledge relating to the consequences of abuse and neglect.

Course/Module aims:
Provide the students with knowledge and tools that will allow them to identify and provide primary care to children going through abuse and neglect.

Learning outcomes - On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:
Identify abused and neglected children and know which community agencies to turn to regarding a maltreated child.

Attendance is mandatory

Teaching arrangement and method of instruction: Frontal lectures

Course/Module Content:
Abuse and neglect – extent of the phenomenon, definitions of different categories of abuse and neglect (emotional, physical, sexual)

Obstacles to reporting (workshop). What prevents professionals from doing mandated reporting? Attitudes and myths, and their effects of reporting; ways to overcome the obstacles.

The relationship between maltreatment and illness.
Effects of trauma on children's development and behavior

Internal injuries: signs and symptoms, differential diagnosis. "Red lights" indicating abuse or neglect. Case study.

Broken bones: diagnosis, differential diagnosis, treatment. Case study.





Shaken Baby Syndrome and Munchausen by Proxy: case study


Sexual abuse of children: signs and symptoms. Case study.
The role of the physician and goals of the physical exam: signs and symptoms, terminology and accepted terms, documentation and accepted methods

Youth law: treatment and protection.
Mandated reporting, and the work of the child protection officer

Emotional therapy for maltreated children: types of treatment and different approaches, including a family approach when diagnosing children

Cooperation with other professionals.
Panel of professionals (child protection officer, representative from Beit Lynn, lawyer
-understanding different professionals and their roles
-how to make contact
