Course/Module description:
The course will provide knowledge and tools in identifying and treating child victims of maltreatment. During the course, students will receive knowledge relating to the consequences of abuse and neglect.

Course/Module aims:
Provide the students with knowledge and tools that will allow them to identify and provide primary care to children going through abuse and neglect.

Learning outcomes - On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:
Identify abused and neglected children and know which community agencies to turn to regarding a maltreated child.

Attendance requirements(%):
Mandatory 80% min.

Teaching arrangement and method of instruction: lectures

Course/Module Content:
1. Abuse and neglect in children History and milestones, scope and definition of the phenomenon in the country.
Characterization of the various categories of abuse / neglect (physical, sexual, emotional abuse, neglect and children witnessing violence).
2. Impact of trauma as a result of abuse and neglect on the brain and child development and behavioral difficulties
3. The Duty to Report and Addresses in the Community Law with an Emphasis on Social Workers for Youth Law
4. Physical abuse: signs and symptoms, red lights and differential diagnosis.
Case discussion
5. Sexual abuse in children: signs and symptoms.
Case discussion
6. Mental and emotional abuse of children
7. Neglect in children - the medical aspect
8. Reporting barriers
What hinders staff reporting?
Attitudes, myths, and the way they affect reporting.
Ways to overcome the barriers
9. X-ray findings, diagnosis and diagnosis differentiate treatment
Case discussion
10. Munchhausen by proxy Medical abuse and the role of the child protection committee
11. Shaken Baby Syndrome Retinal Bleeding and Other Eye Injuries
Head injuries

12. Children with special needs - group at risk, characteristics, red lights and treatment approach

14. Simulations with the participation of actors from Messer (Medical Simulation Center)
