Course/Module description:
The Portfolio is made up of 2 main elements:
- A collection of students’ work that accompanies their learning process and enables them and their teachers to assess their learning and the development of their professionalism as medical trainees along the entire MD program. The Portfolio consists of compulsory and selective assignments, termed assets, as well as approved student-generated initiatives for which points are awarded. With the exception of Year 1, students are required to accumulate a minimum number of points each year in order to progress.
- The Mentor program, which provides each student with a mentor who will accompany and provide support to her/him in a structured manner.
Course/Module aims:
1. To provide a mechanism for assessment of the professional development of the medical student, complementing the assessment of knowledge and skills.
2. To engender in the students awareness and appreciation of the nature and importance of professionalism in the development of their professional identities and in the interests of the patients and communities they will care for in the future.
3. To provide a means for acknowledging and rewarding individual students’ contributions to and initiatives in their community, science and medicine.
4. To inculcate a habit of deliberate self-assessment, goal-setting and development of self-regulated learning skills. All these are intended to prepare the student for the lifelong learning process needed to function as a competent physician in her/his future practice.
5. To help the student advance her/his abilities to receive and process (and to give) feedback.
6. To establish a knowledge base and a degree of expertise in areas less formally taught in the MD program, such as the nature and requirements of academic integrity and acceptable behavior.
