Course/Module description:
The workshop on Community Oriented Primary Care (COPC) is designed to give students exposure to, and experience in, the practical application of the theoretical subjects included in the first semester of the MPH course. The workshop includes an assignment in which the principles and procedures of COPC are applied in planning services for students’ communities.

Course/Module aims:
To study and apply the principles and strategies of COPC to specific communities in the students’ countries of origin. Workshop participants will consider: ways of combining curative, preventive and promotive health care in the local health services setting; the integration of community medicine with primary health care; the application of tools and theories from a variety of disciplines (e.g. epidemiology, behavioral science, and administration/management) in the identification of health needs, planning of programs, and development of evaluation methods.

Learning outcomes - On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:
At the end of the workshop, participants should be able to:
1. Explain and apply the COPC model and process to development of community health programs
2. Identify health needs and challenges of a specific community
3. Determine a priority health condition based on defined criteria
4. Plan an evidence-based community health program including: formulation of specific program objectives, definition of the target population, consideration of alternate intervention strategies, planning monitoring and evaluation activities and surveillance
5. Prepare a written proposal of the development of a community health program

Attendance requirements(%):
Students are expected to attend all weekly workshop sessions

Teaching arrangement and method of instruction: Workshop participants will work in groups (resembling health teams) in which each member will contribute to successfully completing the different tasks throughout the process of developing the COPC program. During the course of the workshop participants will review and present literature, look for and assess relevant data and information, discuss issues pertinent to the development of the COPC program. At the end of the workshop the workgroups will present orally and in writing the proposal for the COPC program in the selected community to fellow workshop participants and faculty. Lectures will introduce each stage of the COPC cycle.

Stages of the COPC cycle (Community definition and characterization, Prioritization of identified health problems; Detailed Assessment of selected health problem;
Design of COPC intervention including monitoring & evaluation

The final grade is comprised of: submitted Group Project (50%), Group Advisor Assesment (30%), Group peer assessment (20%).
