Course/Module description:
This course focuses on teaching basic life support (BLS) for the adult, child, infant.
The course teaches students under which conditions BLS needs to be conducted. This includes episodes of cardiac and repiratory failure as well as chocking, strangulation, near drowing and electrical shock.
Additional emergency events taught include
-Enviromental emergencies- ie treatment of the patient with heat and cold injuries, dehydration ,poisoning and bites and stings
-Trauma and injury which includes treatment of the patient with fractures, burns and woun

Course/Module aims:
Basic instructions on cardiac -pulmonary resuscitation (BLS) both in the community and hospital setting.
Identification of medical emergencies from disease and injury in the community and hospital setting

Learning outcomes - On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:
Objectives:
On completion of the course the student:
Will be able to identify situations that are immediately life threatening
Will be able to perform basic life support, CPR, in the community and within the hospital setting
Will be able to identify and initiate basic medial intervensions in additional medical situations
Will be able to prepare the patient for evacuation and transport to the hospital

Teaching arrangement and method of instruction: Compulsory attendance of all lectures ( this is conditional to taking the final examination)
Successful completion of a practical exams ( this is necessary to attend the theoreticl exam)

Course/Module Content:
Topics
Resusitation an adult, child and infant - including basic CPR
Use of the defibrillator while performing CPR.
Emergency situations (choking, hanging, drowning, electrocution, poisoning).
Patient access during emergency situations to the various, bodily systems: e.g cardiovascular (AP, MI), Neurological (CVA, cramps), Respiratory (asthma), Endocrinological (diabetes).)
Environmental injuries: Climate (dehydration, heat stroke, hypothermia).
Animals related injuries.
Fractures, hemorrhages, burns and wounds.
