Course/Module description:
Geriatric Nursing: This course will focus on the unique aspects of nursing care of the elderly patient
Rehabilitation:
This unit is based on the WHO's ICF (International Classification of Functioning) guidelines and its purpose is to present a model for nurses who treat the complex needs of patients in rehabilitation. The unit aims is to provide tools that maintain and promote physical and mental health with a patient family orientation in rehabilitation settings. The students will be exposed to basic principles that will guide nurses to perform appropriate interventions and patient education for patients and their family in rehabilitation settings. This unit will also expose to the students the different healthcare providers in rehabilitation
Course/Module aims:
1.To provide the students with theoretical and clinical knowledge in the topics listed below.
2.To provide the students with competencies of clinical thinking and of functioning in a multi-disciplinary geriatric team.
3.To focus on all the components of the nursing process, as it is practiced in providing nursing care to the geriatric patients and their families
Rehabilitation:
a. Acquire knowledge of the basic concepts of rehabilitation and disability.
b. Understand the ICF rehabilitation model and key elements of rehabilitation in nursing.
c. Understand the role of nurses in providing physiological, mental, emotional, and social needs of patients and their family in rehabilitation settings.
d. Learn about healthcare providers in rehabilitation and their goals and involvement towards creating a multi-disciplinary team in rehabilitation settings.
Learning outcomes - On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:
Upon completion of the course, the student will demonstrate knowledge and understanding of:
1. Fundamental terms in gerontology
2. Trends in the demography and epidemiology of aging
3. Physiology of healthy aging
4. Develope communication skills with elderly
5. Prevention and health promotion in the elderly
6. Specificity of nursing and multi-disciplinary geriatric assessment.
7. Identify illness in the elderly.
8. Treatable negative functional outcomes, as opposed to physiologic changes of aging.
9. Aspects of clinical pharmacology and pharmacotherapy in the elderly.
10. Common geriatric syndromes – recognition, treatment, prevention.
11. Pain in the elderly.
12. End-of-life issues and dilemmas.
13. The continuum of health care for the elderly in Israel.
14. Elderly abuse and neglect and the role of the nurse.
15. Quality of life in the erdely
Rehabilitation:
At the end of the course, the student will be knowledgeable about the following:
a. Acquittance with the basic concepts of rehabilitation and disability.
b. An Understanding of the basic principles of rehabilitation from a nursing point a view, based on the ICF model.
c. Identify rehabilitation challenges in nursing and the role of nurses in providing physiological, mental, emotional, and social needs of patients and their family in rehabilitation settings.
d. Be able to build treatment plans for a patients' in need of rehabilitation that also include their cultural aspects and socio-demographic characteristics.
e. Be able to create a treatment plan for a family member or primary caregiver of patients' in need of rehabilitation.
f. To be able to identify health care professionals that collaborate as a multi-professional team to provide optimal treatment.

E. The role of the multi-professional team that includes: a speech therapist, a physical therapist, and an occupational therapist.
F. The nurse's role as a treatment coordinator, and as an active partner in leading a therapeutic sequence.
