Course/Module description:
The tannaitic literature includes two literary genres - the mishnah and the Midrash. The Mishnah and the Tosefta belong to the first genre and they usually contain short halakhic paragraphs that are not literary depended on any earlier work. The tannaitic midrashim belong to the second genre and their halakhic material is presented and organized as a commentary to scripture. The works, however, are not entirely uniform in terms of their literary genre, and the relatively high number of mishnaic passages within the tannaitic midrashim is particularly striking. This fact is the starting point for broad discussions on the chronological relationship between the genres, on the ways in which the tannaitic midrashim were formed and edited, and on the reception of the mishnah at the end of the tannaitic period.
This course would include a close reading of passages from the tannaitic Midrashim, while specifically investigating the mishnaic passages included in them. This reading would be the basis for dealing with issues such as the compositional processes of the midrashim, the remnants of lost mishnaic works, and early interpretation of the Mishnah.

Course/Module aims:
1. Refinement of reading and analysis skills of the tannaitic midrashim.
2. Developing thinking methods regarding issues of
redaction in rabbinic literature

Learning outcomes - On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:
1. Read and analyze at a high level a literary unit from the tannaitic midrashim.
2. Create a comparative research of mishnaic paragraphs.
3. Compose an integrative discussion on the various aspects of the integration of the mishnaic paragraphs in the midrashim.
