Course/Module description:
Through a close reading of tractate Pesahim we will encounter the major issues in Mishnah studies: Traces of early halakhah and inter-tannaic interpretation, mishnaic redaction and the formation of its sub-units, as well as Mishnah-tosefta relations and textual criticism. The course will follow the units of the tractates, and we will ask with respect to each of them what are its sources and how it was crystalized. Subsequently we will trace the developments of major facets of the laws of Passover
Course/Module aims:
Learning outcomes - On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:
1. Assess textual variants and their exegetical significance, and use lexical tools for literary interpretation.
2. Identify various textual phenomena including: literary sources, redaction, reconstruct the development of traditions.
3. Compare the mishna to other tannaitic parallels
4. Identify the difference between early and late halakhah and offer explanations to these developments.
5. Describe the different approaches of rabbinic and sectarian halahkah.
