Course/Module description:
The course will include study of selected sugyot from tractate Bava-Batra with emphasis on the research methods of textual criticism based on manuscripts, literal interpretation and redaction history; the elements of Jewish Babylonian Aramaic.

Course/Module aims:
Familiarizing the Babylonian Talmud and its research: the Talmudic way of thinking, the structure of the Talmudic passage (Sugia), the conceptual system of Talmudic thinking and the main practices in the research of the Talmud, encounter with the Jewish Babylonian Aramaic.

Learning outcomes - On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:
The student will be able to read different Talmudic materials; to analyze Talmudic structures; to use manuscripts in order to examine the text of the Talmud; to identify conceptual and hermeneutic trends in the Talmudic material; to understand the editing process reflected in the Sugia; to critically understand the medieval commentaries; to apply the lessons learned in other Talmudic passages; to translate and analyze talmudic aramaic texts.
