Course/Module description:
The graduate course for science students aims at developing criteria of critical thinking which allow an effective transition from reading to academic writing. This genre based course develops writing and reading skills gradually from the level of a paragraph to the text level and includes two genres of scientific literature: exposition and research paper. The course consists of frontal lectures and individual guidance.

Course/Module aims:
The aim of the course is to convey knowledge about academic writing and to develop relevant reading and writing skills.


Learning outcomes - On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:
Distinguish between the genres of scientific literature, their structureת language and content.
Critically evaluate a written text.
Write a model research paper.
Make a short "Power Point" presentation.

Teaching arrangement and method of instruction: A class consists of a frontal lecture and ongoing guidance in which the students receive individual assistance in tackling writing problems.

Course/Module Content:
-Basic reading and writing skills
-main difficulties of the English language
-Criteria necessary for evaluation of information; definition of critical thinking
-Expository genre: paragraph structure, the main patterns of paragraph development
-Revision: the main principles of achieving coherence; outline of intentions
-Research paper: the logic and structure of the Introduction
-Writing up the Methods: design and procedure; the logic of process description
-Presentation of the Results: theory and evidence
-The Discussion section: the difference between description and interpretation; data commentary: claim, reasoning and evidence
-Oral presentation: verbal and visual channels of information

Grading Scheme :
Essay / Project / Final Assignment / Referat 70 %
Presentation / Poster Presentation / Lecture/ Seminar / Pro-seminar / Research proposal 10 %
Submission assignments during the semester: Exercises / Essays / Audits / Reports / Forum / Simulation / others 20 %

Additional information:
Both the assignments and the presentation are mandatory and a prerequisite for the submission of the final project.
