Course/Module description:
The course in an introduction to the Palestinian Aggadic Midrashim. The course will survey the origins of Midrash in Second Temple and tannaitic sources, as well as the historical and social context in which the Aggadic Midrashim were composed in the amoraic period. The main part of the course will center on the individual Aggadic compilations, focusing on their unique features, the exegetical techniques and literary genres used in them, their editing and textual transmission.

Course/Module aims:

Learning outcomes - On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:
Acquaintance with literary, exegetical and editorial features of each Midrash Aggada as well as their historical and social context.
In addition, the student will be able to use the critical editions of the midrashim, the lexicographical tool and the electronic databases as well as the basic scholarly literature on the subject.

Introduction: What is Midrash Aggada
The Dawn of Midrash: Second Temple Literature
Aggada in tannaitic literature
The historical and social context of the Aggadic Midrashim: The Derasha, the audience, the synagogue, the Christians commentary
Exegetical techniques and literary genres
The Aggadic compilations: Genesis Rabba, Leveticus Rabba, Pesikta d’Rav Kahana, Lamentations Rabba, Song of Songs Rabba, Ecclesiastes Rabba, Ruth Rabba, Esther Rabba, Tanhuma.
