Course/Module description:
I. Sentence structure, parts of speech, guessing vocabulary from context. Reading as a behavior - previewing and skimming.
II. Expository texts:
Paragraph structure and patterns of paragraph development.
Global reading, mapping and summarizing.
III. Research report:
Components of a research paper and the structure and logic of each component.
Preparing an oral presentation via verbal and visual channels.
IV. Practicing oral language, listening and simple writing skills.

Course/Module aims:
To help students acquire skills and knowledge of an independent mature reader of academic literature in English. The purpose of the course is to enable students to improve their reading comprehension by analyzing academic articles written in English. The goal is for students to become proficient, independent and critical readers of academic texts in English. Students are taught to integrate and present the information and ideas presented in texts, and to respond to these ideas both orally and in writing.

Learning outcomes - On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:
• read, understand and analyse academic texts in English
*practice listening and writing
• integrate and present the information in the texts in a discussion of the subject as well as in written form
• participate in an academic discussion conducted in English
• make a presentation in English on an academic topic

Attendance requirements(%):
Compulsory

Teaching arrangement and method of instruction: Frontal teaching, individual, pair and group work. Texts from different disciplines and genres are read and a variety of different reading strategies are practiced.

Course/Module Content:
• identifying different genres of academic writing
• recognizing the structure of an article
• knowing when to employ different reading strategies such as skimming and scanning
• analyzing complex sentences
• recognizing the writer's point of view
• becoming familiar with the language and vocabulary common to various fields of study

Course final grade consists of a Class grade(60%) and a Final exam grade (40%)

Class grade includes two midterm unseen tests, 2 projects and all class and home assignments
