Course/Module description:
Definition of the Quaternary epoch and the changes in this definition through time. Climate and climate change in the Quaternary and the impact of climate at various temporal scales on continental environments. We will stress arid and hyperarid environments including monsoonal regions. We will review how soils are used in Quaternary studies, and will discuss tectonic geomorphology, lacustrine and fluvial paleohydrology, drainage basin, slopes and alluvial fans to climate at Quaternary temporal scales.

Course/Module aims:
Increase of knowledge, and understanding of approaches and ways of thinking in continental Quaternary research by using concepts from sedimentology, geomorphology, paleohydrology, paleoclimatology, and geochronology.

Learning outcomes - On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:
Exposure of students to benchmark papers in the subjects. Field trip focusing on sand dunes, loess, evolution of the Negev drainage, landscape evolution in arid watersheds, soils, active tectonics. Students present one subject and write paper on it.
