Course/Module description:
The main topics are taught in the course:

1) Stereochemistry: Isomerism and symmetry, chirality, symmetry, and NMR.
2) Molecular Orbitals.
3) Pericyclic Reactions and their understanding through molecular orbital analysis.
4) Photophysics and Photochemistry.
5) Reactions and Mechanisms, Hammett dependence, HSAB acids and bases, and additional optional material depending on time.

Learning outcomes - On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:
A basic understanding of the importance of molecular orbitals in analyzing structure and reactivity in organic chemistry in general, and pericyclic reactions in particular.
Analysis of the various factors influencing the reactivity of organic compounds.

Grading Scheme :
Written Exam % 80
Submission assignments during the semester: Exercises / Essays / Audits / Reports / Forum / Simulation / others 20 %

Additional information:
At least 5 assignments should be submitted and pass with a grade of 6 and above. The assignment grade will be calculated as the average of the highest scoring 5 passing assignments (20% of the final grade).
The course is open for students from the School of Pharmacy.
The course is delivered in English.
