Course/Module description:
Basic techniques of organic synthesis. Extraction, crystallization, distillation, sublimation, chromatographic separation, and spectroscopic methods. Synthesis: esterification, hydrolysis, etherification, electrophilic aromatic substitution, Grignard and Diels-Alder reactions.
Course/Module aims:
To get acquainted with the basic techniques in experimental organic chemistry
Learning outcomes - On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:
To synthesize and purify a simple organic compound.
To follow a written procedure in organic chemistry synthesis.
To know basic techniques of synthesis and analysis in organic chemistry.
To suggest simple organic syntheses similar to those conducted during the semester.
