Course/Module description:
Basic techniques of organic synthesis. Extraction, crystallization, distillation, sublimation, chromatographic separation, and spectroscopic methods. Synthesis: esterification, hydrolysis, etherification, electrophilic aromatic substitution, Grignard and Diels-Alder reactions.

Course/Module aims:
To get acquainted with the basic techniques in experimental organic chemistry

Learning outcomes - On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:
To synthesize and purify a simple organic compound.

To follow a written procedure in organic chemistry synthesis.

To know basic techniques of synthesis and analysis in organic chemistry.

To suggest simple organic syntheses similar to those conducted during the semester.

Simple distillation, reflux, recrystallization, sublimation, chromatographic separation, steam distillation, vacuum distillation

Lab's guide

Any book on experimental organic chemistry (e.g. the books by Pavia, Roberts, Vogel, etc)

Grading Scheme :
Submission assignments during the semester: Exercises / Essays / Audits / Reports / Forum / Simulation / others 35 %
Clinical Work / Lab Work / Practical Work / Workshops 35 %
Personal Guide / Tutor / Team Evaluation 30 %

Additional information:
The final grade is composed of:
65% for continuous work in the lab (experimental), 25% for quizzes, and 10% for lab reports.
