Course/Module description:
Poultry products are the major source of animal proteins for the human population in many countries around the world including Israel, and a main industry for Israel’s agriculture. Good understanding of the veterinary and veterinary related aspects of poultry species is important for all Israeli veterinarians and not only for veterinarians who wish to pursue a career in poultry medicine. This course will provide a comprehensive overview of the important disease etiologies of poultry species and the prevention, diagnosis and control of poultry diseases. The course will provide a specific emphasis on the zoonotic and food safety aspects of poultry health and will address the emerging topic of animal welfare in poultry production.
Course/Module aims:
•Introduce the student to poultry production systems and the structure of the Israeli poultry industry from a veterinary stand point.
•Discuss the prevention, diagnosis, and control of poultry diseases from a flock medicine perspective.
•Discuss the response of poultry species to infectious and none infectious diseases.
•Review the infectious and none infectious diseases of poultry.
•Provide the student with tools to analyze and respond to poultry disease situations.
•Provide the student with the required background and knowledge to be able to participate in public discussions and debates about poultry related issues.
Learning outcomes - On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:
