Course/Module description:
The course provides introduction to veterinary surgery. The course comprise of both theoretical and practical learning of basic surgical concepts and techniques, as well as veterinary rehabilitation. The second part of the course relates to surgical diseases of the skin and wound management.
Course/Module aims:
Introduction to basic surgical concepts, including the preoperative preparations and surgical techniques and equipment.
Introduction to the concepts of skin surgery and wound management.
Introduction to veterinary rehabilitation and physiotherapy
Learning outcomes - On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:
• Demonstrate knowledge in all the stages of preparations of the patient, the team and the surgical suit, to surgery.
• Demonstrate knowledge of surgical instruments and basic surgical techniques.
• Practice knot tying and various suturing techniques.
• Practice bandaging techniques.
• Demonstrate knowledge of wound management.
• Demonstrate knowledge of surgical skin procedures: primary wound closure, skin flaps and skin grafts.
• Demonstrate knowledge of surgical diseases of the skin.
• Become familiar with basic concepts of veterinary rehabilitation and physiotherapy.

• Preparation of the patient, operating team and operating room to surgery.
• Surgical instrumentation and basic surgical techniques.
• Suture materials and suturing techniques.
• Practical knot tying - laboratory.
• Suturing - laboratory.
• Wound healing and wound management.
• Skin reconstruction.
• Surgical skin diseases.
• Bandages and drains.
• Bandaging - laboratory.

Attending the practical laboratories is mandatory! Failure to attend, without permission, will prevent the student from attending to the final exam.
It is mandatory to bring to the practical laboratories the following equipment:
• Needle holder
• Tissue forceps
• Hemostat
• Scissors
