Course/Module description:
The course will include information on the structure and scope of the various industries in Israel: dairy cattle, beef cattle, sheep, goats and pigs, as well as organizations and bodies involved in these fields. Production animals and breeds will be introduced, various breeding methods will be discussed, animal holdings and breeding facilities, herd flocks, herd composition and life cycle in the herd, milking management in milk-producing animals, familiarity with the indicators for assessing production efficiency, production quality and production planning and milk quotas . In addition, exposure to innovations from local research on management issues such as cooling in dairy farms and the relationship between welfare and production in pigs.
Course/Module aims:
To provide first year students of veterinary medicine basic knowledge and tools in the fields of livestock breeding in Israel, including dairy and beef cattle, sheep, goats and pigs. The course will focus on the local Israeli management and husbandry derived from the geographical-cultural reality in Israel and on the connection between management and animal health and their productivity.
