Course/Module description:
This course deals with the principles of correct medication administration. The students will be taught first line and other diverse treatment plans for the following main diseases, such as congestive heart failure, ischemic Heart disease, hypertension, hyperlipidemia, diabetes, headache and migraines, peptic ulcer disease, and asthma. They also learned NOAC and other anticoagulants, as well as calculations of CHAD, CHADVAS and kidney function.
Regarding all the diseases mentioned above they are taught the accepted medical protocols for their treatment. They are taught the preferred clinical treatment plan for each disease based on a patient’s individual problems or needs. Interactions are also to be discussed such as between medication-medication, medication-disease and medication-lab results inconsistences. Alternative treatments are taught based on the specific interaction issues. In addition to the lectures are workshops, the students were divided into small groups with a Clinical Pharmacist, this is done every week of the course for 4 hours. Part of the time is used to emphasize treatment plans and alternative treatments and part of the time the students are given clinical cases. The students along with the clinical pharmacist would discuss the problems involved, the interactions that exist and the best possible clinical treatment plan.
Course/Module aims:
To gain knowledge of the most updated and accepted medication treatment plans for diseases.
To gain the tools and ability to give medication based advice when working in different environments such as a Pharmacy, Hospital department and in the community.
Learning outcomes - On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:
To be able to give medication based advice to patient and doctors.
To be able to find reliable medication information in literature and in different resources.
To be able to analyze and asses cases which deal with medical treatment plans.
