Course/Module description:
The course unravels the basic concepts of the pharmacy profession and of pharmaceutical sciences. These include the development of drugs, pharmaceutical literature, dosage forms and formulations. It will also introduce the student to pharmaceutical calculations.
Course/Module aims:
Learn what the profession of Pharmacy is and understand fundamental concepts in pharmaceutics. To know and understand the basic considerations in drug development and pharmaceutical calculations.
Learning outcomes - On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:
• Define and describe the profession of pharmacy and pharmaceutics
• Describe pharmaceutics terminology
• Describe the concepts of drug development
• Compare routes of administration and dosage forms
• Calculate pharmaceutical problems in prescribing and pharmaceutical practice

Course/Module Content:
History of Pharmacy, evidence-based medicine, nomenclature, medicinal materials, introduction to drug development, routes of administration and dosage forms, generic drugs, solubility and dissolution, additives.
Pharmacopeial measurement tools, calculations in prescriptions and dosage, various expressions of concentration and dilutions, equivalence, isotonicity
