Course/Module description:
Structure and function of the Human body.
Course/Module aims:
Study of the structure and function of the Human body and the relationships among structures.
Learning outcomes - On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:
• Describe each of the body systems and the related organs.
• Correlate structure-function relationship for the body organs.
• Interactions of body organs.

Course/Module Content:
1. Introduction (2 h): Organization of the human body, Levels of structural organization, Body systems, Anatomical positions, Directional terms, Planes and sections.
2. The Skeletal System (4 h): Functions, Types of bones and joints, Histology, Division of the skeletal system.
3. The Muscular System (2 h): Types of muscles, Functions, Principal skeletal muscles, Common disorders.
4. The Respiratory System (6 h): Organs (nose, pharynx, larynx, trachea, bronchi, alveoli, lungs), Respiratory muscles, Pulmonary ventilation, Control of respiration, Common disorders.
5. The Cardiovascular System (4 h): Blood, Heart (location, pericardium, heart wall, chambers, great vessels, valves, blood supply, conduction system, cardiac cycle), Blood vessels (arteries, veins, capillaries, physiology of circulation, major arteries and veins), Common disorders.
6. The Lymphatic System (2 h): Lymphatic tissues (nodes, tonsils, spleen), Lymph circulation.
7. The Digestive System (6 h): Digestive processes, Peritoneum, Organs (oral cavity, pharynx, esophagus, stomach, pancreas, liver, gallbladder, intestines). Common disorders.
8. The Urinary System (2 h): Kidneys, Functions, Ureters, Urinary bladder, Urethra, Urine, Common disorders.
9. The Reproductive System (4 h): Male (scrotum, testes, ducts, accessory sex glands, semen, penis), Female (ovaries, uterine, uterus, vagina, vulva, perineum, mammary glands), Female reproductive cycle, Common disorders.
10. The Nervous System (12 h): Nervous tissue, Central nervous system, spinal nerves and cranial nerves, Autonomic nervous system, Somatic senses and special senses.
