Course/Module description:
This combined course (histology and pathology) is divided into two parts. The first deals with general pathology which applies to all systems. The remaining are dedicated to teaching the disease mechanisms and relevant pathology pertaining to the most common diseases students will encounter in the future.
Course/Module aims:
1. Gain a basic understanding of the definitions of basic disease processes (What is the difference between etiology and pathogenesis? What is acute inflammation? What is chronic inflammation? What is neoplasia? What types of neoplasia exist? What is the difference between different types of neoplasia?)
2. Apply an understanding of basic concepts learned in the general block to disease processes covered in the systems block, and be able to apply clinic-pathological correlations: eg. What is the pathogenesis of squamous cell carcinoma of the cervix? What is the pathogenesis of peptic ulcer disease? What is the basic pathological process underlying Barrett's esophagus? What are the complications of Barrett's esophagus?
Learning outcomes - On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:
1 Understand the basic histological concepts and the basic histology of selected organs.
2.Classify diseases according to their basic category (infectious, neoplastic, degenerative, etc.)
3. Define and classify pathologic processes (infarction, necrosis, inflammation, metaplasia, dysplasia, etc.)
4. Summarize disease processes based on their etiology, pathogenesis, and pathological findings as they relate to the patient's symptoms

Frontal lectures.
Course/Module Content:
Basic histology and pathology of the following systems:
Introduction, epithelium, connective tissue, muscle, tissue damage, inflammation, cardiovascular system, neoplasia, respiratory system, gastrointestinal system, liver, urinary system, skin, peripheral and and central nervous system.
Required Reading:
Powerpoint presentations (even if were not presented frontally).

Relevant chapters in Robbins and Cotran: Basic Pathology, 10th ed.

Additional information:
This is a combined course of the previous separate histological and pathological courses for pharmacy students.
