Course/Module description:
In this course, we will explore how the Jewish people have grappled with the challenge of multicultural coexistence since the establishment of the State of Israel. We will examine this challenge as a manifestation of trends that have accompanied the Jewish people since their inception. Israel's diversity reflects a variety of visions of the future, dreams, and fears. The course will express the belief that it is possible to shape a better existence for this diversity within the State of Israel. In the first part of the course, we will examine contemporary approaches to the Israeli public sphere. In the second part, we will delve into the personal, spiritual, and Educational foundations that could enable the growth of "people of connections" who are committed to this challenge.
Course/Module aims:
• Acquainting students with various approaches to Israeli identity diversity: the melting pot, multiculturalism, the common good and "friction reduction", and the ability to critically evaluate these approaches and understand their interrelations.
• Exploring educational philosophies and ideals that can foster a society where both collective and individual identities thrive.
Learning outcomes - On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:
• Students will become aware of their own identities and the complexities involved, experience enriching and developmental encounters based on diverse identities.
• Students will be able to present and critically analyze key concepts in various approaches to Israel's multicultural coexistence.
• Students will formulate their own stance regarding their role as educators in shaping their students' attitudes towards Israel's diversity.
