Course/Module description:
Does the Bible and its commentators present an ideal family? We will examine what are the necessary elements for building a family, and deal with issues regarding communication, support and comfort, love and containment, dedication and loyalty. We will understand the stories within the context of the ancient world and throughout the generations, through the lens of biblical exegesis, as well as their relevance for our present day. We will consider the structure of the family in the Bible. We will address questions such as "Did Ishmael honor his father Abraham? How did David deal with his rebellious son Absalom?

Course/Module aims:
To learn the text and understand various exegetical approaches: Study and analysis of various textual units, commentary and how to teach them in a classroom.

Learning outcomes - On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:
To divide a unit of biblical text into its parts, to find dey words, to discribminate between essential and less essential elements. To determine between differing viewpoints of parallel texxts, and to construct a complete picture from them. To analyze the words of various exegetes, to critique them and to decide between the various commentaries. To discriminate between the method of "pshat" and "drash" and to be able to define the difference between them. To explain the goal of the book, its lessons and uniqueness in relation to other books.
