Course/Module description:
The Willem C. Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot is the largest commercial law moot competition in the world, with the participation of over 300 universities from 75 countries.
The competition, held annually in the city of Vienna, is a simulation of a fictional commercial dispute between two companies from two different countries before an international arbitration tribunal. The case changes every year, presenting facts and raising legal questions that are at the core of international commercial arbitration. After conducting extensive research, each team submits two comprehensive memoranda – one for claimant, one for respondent – before the competition. During the competition in Vienna the team members present their oral arguments based upon the memoranda before arbitral experts in the issues considered.
The long writing and research process preceding the submission of the memoranda, as well as the training for the oral pleadings, are done with the personal guidance of two professional coaches.
Course/Module aims:
The primary goal of the Vis Moot is to foster the study of international commercial law and arbitration for resolution of international business disputes through its application to a concrete problem of a client. In addition, the students of the course develop their academic writing skills in English and their oral presentation of legal arguments, while learning various methods of research.
