Course/Module description:
The course is aimed at undergraduate and postgraduate students who would like to have in-depth knowledge of Patent Law

Course/Module aims:
The course is designed for students who wish to extend their knowledge on the basic principles of Patent Law – an intriguing field of expertise that combines law and technology and generally not thoroughly addressed in the academy.

Learning outcomes - On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:
By the end of the Course the students will have a deeper understanding of Patent Law and will acquire the tools that will enable them in the future to analyze further aspects of this area of the law. In particular, students will acquire a legal ground that will enable them to work in areas in which Patent Law has relevance, whether as private counsel or as in-house counsel in research-based or technological companies or in the academy.

• What is an invention?
• Novelty
• Inventive step
• Utility and industrial applicability
3. Ownership and service inventions.
4. The Patent claims
5. The examination of a patent application
6. Patent infringement and defences to patent infringement
7. Patents in the high tech industry: computer software patents and the troll phenomenon
8. Patents in the pharmaceutical industry: politics and commercial interests
9. The relationship between patent law and restrictive practices; abuse of patent monopoly
