The purpose of the course is to examine issues related to sex crimes through survivors' perspectives. The course will focus on the psychological, social and legal aspects of sex offences and victimization.
Course/Module aims:
Learning outcomes - On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:
Impart knowledge and tools to cope with issues related to sexual assault and to examine them critically from psychological and legal perspectives.
Responsibly speak with survivors, creating a supportive and helpful environment.
Be aware of tools to offer legal aid to sexual assault survivors

Course/Module Content:
Part 1 – Introduction: Psychological and social aspects of sexual assaults:
1) Familiarity with the organization's work (testimony from victims about their experience of the legal process.
2) Sexual assault – myths and attitudes
3) Trauma, sexual trauma and complex sexual trauma (psychological, social and legal aspects).
4) Sexual assault as portrayed in the media.
Part 2 – Sexual assaults and victims: legal issues
5) From identifying the wrongdoing to taking legal action (the N-B-C model)
6) Development of sexual crimes in Israeli law
7) The criminal process – as a legal and therapeutic process
8) Translating the language of injury to legal language
9) Sexual assault in the context of power and dependency
10) Sexual Harassment Law
11) The Victims' Rights Law
12) Alternatives to the legal process
Part 3: Social Legal Practice – enriching the professional toolbox
13) Social Legal Practice
14) Empathy and creating an effective dialog with victims of assaults
15) Rape Crisis Center and departments for assistance with legal proceedings – bridge between victims and system
