Course/Module description:
Private International Law deals with the three central questions: jurisdiction, choice of law and foreign judgments. That is, which country may entertain a case; which law will apply to the case; what can be done with the judgment rendered.
This course will introduce students to these questions, will apply them to specific questions and introduce studs to the relevant Israeli rules.
Course/Module aims:
To become familiar with private international law, and understand of its importance to any jurist; to understand the way of thinking about the discipline in the field, the basic sources of the field and the problem-solving methods of the field; in-deapth understanding of specific issues.
Learning outcomes - On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:
To identify cases in which private international law cases arise;
To specifically identify the relevant question, classify it and explain it;
To identify the sources with which the problem is to be solved;
To explain and evaluate possible solution.

Lectures including discussion of reading materials.
Course/Module Content:
A. Introduction to Private International Law – The basic questions of jurisdiction, choice of law and judgements.
B. Foreign Judgements – What could be done with a foreign judgment in Israel? Which judgments could be enforce? Could judgments be recognized? What are the outcomes of these preceding?
C. Jurisdiction and Choice of Law in Property and Obligations – When will an Israeli court deal with such issues? How?
D. Jurisdiction and Choice of Law in Family Matters – When will an Israeli court deal with family questions? How? Among the questions to be discussed: marriage and divorce, maintenance, legal capacity, matrimonial property, adoption.
E. Private International Law in Judea and Samaria – The mixed and interesting case of the Israeli attitude towards these territories: are they treated as Israel is? Are they treated as a foreign country? Is there a unique special treatment? When will an Israeli court apply Israeli law on cases that happened there, etc.
