Course/Module description:
This is course covers various IP topics: patent law, trademark law, copyright law and other related subjects. The course focuses on patent law and trademark law in greater depth.
Course/Module aims:
Learning outcomes - On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:
On successful completion of this module, students should have good command of doctrinal patents and trademark law, as well as an acquaintance with basic principles of comparative I.P and the different theoretical justifications for I.P (and their critiques). Students should also have tools for approaching and analyzing challenges in the area of I.P, based on different policy considerations.

1st Lecture – Theoretical basis of IP, a brief history of IP rights
2nd Lecture – International Agreements: Paris Convention, PCT, TRIPs
3rd Lecture – The character of patent right; the difference between patent rights and rights in physical property; the difference between patent rights and other IP rights; controversial issues in patent protection
4th Lecture – The character of design patent right (industrial design); the difference between design patent rights and rights in physical property; the difference between design patent rights and other IP rights; controversial issues in design patent protection
5th Lecture – The character of copyright; the difference between copyright and rights in physical property; the difference between copyright and other IP rights; controversial issues in copyright
6th Lecture – The character of trademark right; the difference between trademark rights and rights in physical property; the difference between trademark rights and other IP rights; controversial issues in trademark protection
7th Lecture – The character of rights in geographical indications and appellations of origin; the difference between these rights and rights in physical property; the difference between these rights and other IP rights; controversial issues in protection of geographical indications and appellations of origin
8th Lecture – The character of publicity right; the difference between publicity rights and rights in physical property; the difference between publicity rights and other IP rights; controversial issues in publicity right
9th Lecture – The suggestion to protect Traditional Knowledge, its political rationales and its controversiality
10th Lecture (from this lecture to the end of the 1st semester the lectures will focus on patent law) – Patentable inventions
11th Lecture – The process of patent registration, patent structure, claims (product or apparatus)
12th Lecture – Novelty and non-obviousness
13th Lecture – Utility; patents infringement
14th Lecture – Patents on new medicines
