Course/Module description:
This course provides an introduction to fundamental concepts of criminal law. The focus is on substantive, rather than procedural, law; more specifically, it concerns the requirements of criminal liability.
Course/Module aims:
The aim of this course is to provide criminology students with basic knowledge of the substantive criminal law and give them the tools to critically examine various issues pertaining to the requirements of criminal liability.
Learning outcomes - On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:
1. Read statutes and judgments on matters pertaining to substantive criminal law.
2. Comprehend the principles and requirements of criminal liability.
3. Identify the constituent elements of an offense and specify the requirements of criminal liability.
4. Apply the principles of criminal law to various factual scenarios.
