Course/Module description:
This course provides an introduction to the basic concepts of criminal procedure and evidence.
Course/Module aims:
The aim of this course is to provide criminology students with basic knowledge of the criminal justice system and give them tools to critically asses the law governing police investigations and judicial trials.
Learning outcomes - On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:
Having successfully completed this course, students will have the skills to:
1. Read statutes and judgments dealing with issues pertaining to the law of criminal procedure and evidence.
2. Specify requirements which have to be met guaranteeing the rights of a suspect or defendant in the course of an investigation or trial, namely: the right to privacy, the right to silence, the right to freedom, and the presumption of innocence.
3. Determine the law and apply it to factual scenarios.
