Course/Module description:
The aim of the course is to gain extensive familiarity with the phenomenon of "at-risk youth" and the world of concepts related to education and rehabilitation of children and youth at risk. In the course, we will cover and then critically assess theories to explain the "risk" component. We will then discuss the implications of these theories for the strategies chosen to deal with these phenomena in Israel and around the world. In addition, the legal body that governs rules on the administration of rehabilitation centres for at-risk youth will be presented, as well as an introduction to bodies that provide children and young people in distress and risk in Israel. Focus will be given to programs in the community and home-based outreach, with special emphasis given to coping with law-breaking adolescents. Case studies on addiction that characterize

Teaching arrangement and method of instruction:

Course/Module Content:
Lesson 1: Children and youth at risk in Israel and around the world - initial definitions and a basic typology for knowing the risk factors

Lesson 2: Basic characteristics of adolescence, theories to explain the formation of the phenomenon of children and youth at risk, especially in adolescence. Trends and statistics of children and youth at risk

Lesson 3: Basic concepts in juvenile delinquency - A, acquaintance with the bodies that treat juvenile delinquency, recidivism in Israel and around the world, theories dealing with juvenile delinquency.

Lesson 4: Basic concepts in juvenile delinquency - B, dealing with juvenile delinquents in Israel and around the world, correctional services in Israel and around the world, the right to development of minors deprived of their liberty, the right to alternative proceedings (unifying justice) in criminal proceedings, rehabilitation for juvenile offenders.

Lesson 5: Theoretical approaches to working with children and youth at risk, prevention programs, ways of treatment and intervention in working with at-risk youth
Lesson 6: Personal conversations to choose the topic of the work
Lesson 7: Familiarity with the relevant legislation related to the treatment and dealing with children and youth at risk and the State of Israel's commitment to the International Convention on the Rights of the Child

Lesson 8: Addictions among teens: drugs (including explosive drugs), alcohol, screens and other risky behaviors

Lesson 9: Unique groups excluded at high risk (ultra-Orthodox, Arabs, immigrants from the Commonwealth of Nations and Ethiopia, the LGBT community, etc.) and delving into the dropout phenomenon (overt and covert) from the education system

Lesson 10: Dealing with the phenomenon of at-risk youth in the community and boarding schools. Distinction between youth villages and welfare boarding schools (rehabilitation, therapeutic and post-hospitalization)

Lesson 11: Girls at risk, unique behaviors of girls at risk and familiarity with the unique services and frameworks for girls in distress

Lesson 12: Presenting Reports in Class
