Course/Module description:
Gender, as oppose to sex, symbolises the social and cultural structures of femininity and masculinity. This module aims to encourage gendered thinking in criminology, emphasizing the relation between gender and crime, and social gender expectations. The module follows the past and present social constructions related to femininity and masculinity, and the interaction between those and delinquency. We will examine the trends and changes in social constructions of gender, their effect on crime, and the deterministic potential of gender development and offending. The role of gender in the justice system, including gender differences in policing and punishment, will be described and discussed.
